Thame’s Best Takeaway – Indian – Round 11 – Star and Garter

For the eleventh review of Thame's Best Takeaway, our foodie will be getting an Indian takeaway from The Star and Garter.  With Mings, Smarts, Atalay's Kebab Van and Patrons in the finals, it was time for our foodie to complete the review by picking Thame's best Indian.

The Indian takeaways being reviewed are The Star and Garter, House of Spice and Dewani Shahs.

To keep the review fair, the following dishes will be ordered:

  • Chicken Korma
  • Lamb Madras
  • Pilau Rice
  • Keema Naan
  • Two poppadoms

The review will be based upon: the best quality, taste, portion size, and also what is best value for money.

So for the first part of the Indian review, here is the Star and Garter.

“After a week off of takeaway duties, I made my return this weekend and ventured to the Star and Garter. I had never actually eaten an Indian takeaway from here, and I had read some of the bad press previously in the year regarding the storage area. But from comments I’d seen on social media, it seemed like the food was still of a high quality. Never the less my reviews are not based on what I’ve read, they are based on what I see and taste, as proved with Mings being picked as my winner in the Chinese category, after also receiving a lot of bad press.

So to the review, I phoned up at 7pm on Saturday night and placed my order of Chicken Korma, Lamb Madras, Pilau Rice, Keema Naan and 2 Poppadoms. I was pleased to be told it would only be a 20 minute waiting time and even more pleased to find out that it would only set me back £20.90. Very reasonable I thought.

So first up was the Chicken Korma, there seemed to be a generous helping of Chicken to the dish, it was well cooked and tender. The sauce was plentiful and nice and creamy. If anything it may have been slightly too runny but had a nice traditional flavour to it.

The Lamb Madras was nice, but it certainly seemed to be lacking spice to the dish. Madras can come different at every Indian you go to, and it’s usually a sour but hot flavour (or at least a good kick to it). This tasted neither hot or sour BUT it was a nice curry with good texture, and the lamb was very tender and cooked well which was a bonus.

The Pilau rice was a bit dry and lumpy but again very flavoursome. The Keema Naan was lovely, still piping hot when I got it home. It was crispy but remained light and had great flavour. Some Keema Naans can lack meat but like the chicken this was a generous portion.

Overall I’d certainly stay this was a more than solid start to the Indian review, each dish was full of fantastic flavours that you come to expect with Indian takeaways. The only dish I was slightly let down on was the Lamb Madras, where I would have personally preferred a hotter madras or more of a kick to it. But for £20.90 i don't think you can go wrong!”

Stay tuned in the next couple of weeks as we finish off the Indian review and Thame's Best Takeaway comes to a conclusion.
