For the tenth review of Thame’s Best Takeaway, our foodie will be getting a pizza delivery from Patrons Pizza to review their margherita pizza. With Mings, Smarts and Atalay’s Kebab Van in the finals it was up to either Patrons or Dominos to see if they could take the best pizza in Thame crown.
To keep the review fair, we decided that a medium margherita pizza would be ordered via the takeaway’s online app and it would then be delivered.
The review will be based upon: the best quality, taste, portion size, speed of delivery and also what is best value for money.
In the pizza section we have tried to keep it as fair as possible, so we will only be reviewing Dominos and Patrons Pizza, as they are the only takeaways that deliver pizzas in Thame.
So for the second review in the pizza delivery section here is the Patrons Pizza review.
“So the second and final review of the pizza section. Last week Dominos delivered a fast and delicious pizza, although the price was extortionate, which was slightly off putting. I didn’t even know that Patrons now has an app for deliveries until I was informed for the review. So I was interested to find out how a non-chain shop could stack up against a multi national chain.
Patrons app was very easy to navigate, and offered everything Dominos could, which I thought was very impressive. As I searched the pizza section I was delighted to find out that a medium margherita came to £6.49. That’s more like it, a much more respectable price for a pizza. I just hoped there wouldn’t be a quality drop.
As I went to the checkout a little warning popped up that said minimum delivery is £11.00, which I thought was fair enough otherwise you could get people ordering chips to be delivered and they would lose out on the fuel. Besides, the medium margherita last week was £11.99 on its own. So I added a Coke and some popcorn chicken bites to my order. This took me over the £11.00 threshold making my total order £11.47 for a Coke, medium pizza and popcorn chicken bites. It certainly felt like better value for money compared to the Dominos.
The pizza took 23 minutes in total to be delivered to my house, which was 10 minutes longer than Dominos, but gave me satisfaction that it had probably been freshly made.
I opened the branded box and the pizza looked roughly the same size as the Dominos one. Patrons don’t actually state the size of their pizzas on their app, but without getting my tape measure out I would guess it was the same size as Dominos which was 11.5 inches.
The pizza was cut into six slices and just glancing at the pizza the cheese looked perfect and not overdone at all. I lifted up the pizza and there was also minimal grease.
So let’s move on to the taste. The pizza like Dominos was piping hot throughout. There was also a good mixture of cheese and tomato, there was probably less flavours tickling my tastebuds, compared to the Dominos pizza, but this is the plainest pizza you can order. Some pizzas can feel very unhealthy but this felt very light and less stodgy than the Dominos pizza, and there was also a pot of garlic and herb sauce for me to dip into.
So overall my winner of the pizza round is going to be Patrons Pizza. Dominos was slightly more flavoursome but I was really impressed with the Patrons price, delivery and the fact that they have taken on one of the big chains, and in my opinion pulled together a better value for money pizza without compromising on taste.”
So Patrons joins Mings, Smarts Fish and Chips, and Atalay’s Kebab Van in the winners section. The final stages of the review will be conducted over the coming weeks, where our foodie will be visiting the various Indian takeaways that Thame has to offer.
