Teenagers spend an estiated 22% of their income on clothing. This is why Eco Club at Lord Williams Upper school has focussed on fashion as one of their main drives to educate the students and make them aware of the environmental impact of fashion production and waste. Currently 8-10% of the world's carbon emissions are due to the fashion industry, more than the worlds aviation and shipping combined. In November they held their second Re-love Your Stuff clothes swap. Students brought in clothes they no-longer wore and exchanged them for others. It was well supported and most of the clothes found new homes.
They also are due to have their next second hand uniform swap to help extend the life of these garments. They are hoping that these events can become a regular part of the school's calendar and that, working with the charity shops and PTFA's textile recycing bins, they can keep clothing out of land fill.
