On the 8th of August, a band of experienced Bellringers will attempt to ring a Peal of Stedman Triples, to mark 150 years since eight bells were installed in St Mary's Parish Church, replacing the previous ring of six installed in 1627, which included some that had been there since the early 1400's. A fund was raised by Dr Richard Lee of £240.00 for the work.
The new bells in 1876, consisted of the original six being melted down with some of the old metal and then added to some new metal to make the new ring of eight bells. An invited band of ringers rang a Peal in August 1876 to mark the installation of the eight new bells.
Sadly, after five years the bells were found to be unsafe, having been carelessly rehung in the old framework and were taken down until a new frame and floor was installed at a cost of £120.00, which was borne by S Lacey in 1884. In the Victorian years, all over the country many bells were being upgraded with extra bells, as the Victorians had a great love of Church bells.
The peal should take around three hours to complete and will start at 10.00am. We hope those that hear them will enjoy the sound and appreciate the reason for the ringing.
