Oxford Bus Company’s popular Chatty Bus initiative is returning this summer to help address loneliness.
Chatty Bus volunteers from Oxford Bus Company supported by Age UK Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire Mind will be on-board the new 280 service on Tuesday 6th August to chat with passengers as they travel between Thame and Oxford.
The service stops at Headington, Wheatley and Tiddington and customers travelling on the special "Chatty Bus" journeys will benefit from a 50% discount to cost just £1 for non-concessionary bus pass holders.
Oxford Bus Company is delivering the Chatty Bus initiative following the success of previous campaigns after it first launched in 2019. This year it has partnered with the two local charities to enhance the support provided.
Luke Marion, Managing Director of Oxford Bus Company: “Loneliness remains a real issue that affects so many people in our community and we hope the return of Chatty Bus will help make a difference.
“Research has found buses form an important social function and by providing extra engagement in partnership with two excellent charities we hope to deliver more support and raise awareness of the issue and the help that is available.”
Chatty Bus will feature a variety of games and information on local activities and social groups relevant to a wide range of audiences. Participants will be encouraged to enjoy a day out in Oxford before taking their return journeys home.
In 2022 Go-Ahead Group, the parent company of Oxford Bus Company, signed the Government’s Employers Pledge, committing to help improve social connections and reduce loneliness levels.
Buses can provide a vital lifeline for many of those living in isolation, as a third of Britons admit that they deliberately catch the bus to have some human contact. While two-thirds of bus users say services create strong community ties, and eight out of 10 know someone who depends on the bus.
