Chinnor put on another stunning performance under the lights to overcome an abrasive and competitive Rosslyn Park. Both teams made light of the heavy, wet conditions to put on a feast of running rugby for the huge, raucous crowd. Another showcase occasion for National 1 Rugby which sees Chinnor comfortably retaining their lead as league leaders.
In a week that legendary all-time great Barry John passed away it was fitting that George Worboys put on a dazzling display. On a slippery, heavy surface Worboys managed to glide across the top like a skilled water boatman as he punched numerous holes in Park’s defence. He scored one solo try, created another for Willie Ryan and managed to kick three conversions in the tough conditions.
Park, with the benefit of the wind and slope, attacked from the outset but Chinnor’s defence was superb. A turnover on 14 minutes gave Feeney the opportunity to kick deep. From the ensuing lineout Walker dotted down, 5-0.
The hosts attacked from the restart and after huge carries from Ryan and Hardwick, scrum half Carter released Browning in space. There was no stopping the lethal winger as he swerved and stepped past several defenders to double the lead, 10-0.
Park attacked from the restart and were looking dangerous until Worboys spotted an opportunity to intercept and showed a clean pair of heals to scorch home from 80 metres. He converted his solo effort to increase the lead to 17-0. Park again got on the front foot and from a 5 metre lineout opened their account to narrow the gap, 17-5.
On 38 minutes the hosts secured the try bonus point after another searing Worboys break led to crowd favourite Goss score. A superb conversion from man of the match Worboys saw Chinnor go into halftime 24-5 up.
The heavy conditions slowed the frantic pace down in the second half, although both teams looked to play with pace. Worboys continued to dominate play when another scything burst and acceleration saw him get to within metres of the line. A last-ditch tackle from Smith was in vain as George popped the ball to Chinnor’s towering Captain Willie Ryan in support who dived over to finish a superb move, 31-5.
Chinnor’s dominance at the set piece kept the visitors at bay for long periods but after an Ellis break they managed to score from another driving maul to finish the scoring at 31-10.
Tom Clifford put in a huge shift on debut and was roared onto the pitch from the bumper crowd who were pleased to see the ex mini make such an impact as an 18 year old.
Another 5 points in another enthralling encounter with both teams displaying the best of National One rugby.
