1st September 2025
Lidl Great Britain is pleased to announce their proposal to deliver a new foodstore on Aylesbury Road, Thame.
As part of our commitment to community engagement, we would like to invite local residents and stakeholders to view and comment on our proposal before we finalise and submit a planning application.
This leaflet provides details of our emerging proposals and an invitation to our public drop-in consultation on the 9th September 2025 from 3pm to 7pm at Thame Town Council, High Street, Thame, OX9 3DP.
The Proposal
The proposal is to redevelop the site to provide a new Lidl foodstore with associated car parking, flood mitigation areas and ample soft landscaping areas.
The proposed Lidl foodstore will have a Gross Internal Area of 2,184 sqm, of which 1,529 sqm will be sales area. The remaining floorspace will comprise of warehouse storage (430sqm) and ancillary space (225sqm), which will comprise customer toilets, an in-store bakery, staff welfare facilities, ancillary office space and storage / utility space.
The new foodstore will be accessed by the existing entrance point off Aylesbury Road. The proposed development will comprise 130 car parking spaces, including 7 accessible spaces, 9 parent & child spaces, and 2 EV spaces.
The site benefits from bus stops on both sides of Aylesbury Road, with an existing pathway linking to the town centre ensuring the store will be publicly accessible.
The proposed Lidl store will be open between the hours of:
- 0800 - 2200 Monday-Saturday (inc. Bank Holidays); and
- 1000 - 1600 Sundays.
There will be a service area to the rear of the site which will be used for deliveries to the Lidl foodstore.
Benefits of the Proposed Development
- Maximising the use of a sustainably located site to reduce the use of greenfield sites for development;
- A contemporary building design that will complement and respect the surrounding area;
- Customer facilities, including dedicated in-store bakery and customer toilets;
- A modern shopping choice and provision of a new mainstream discount retailer providing a clean and fresh shopping experience to meet the needs of customers;
- The creation of jobs locally through the construction process and 40 new employment opportunities once the development has been completed;
- Sustainable features including Rapid electric vehicle charging points and roof-mounted solar panels;
- Above the Living Wage Foundation rate (£12) for all eligible employees and no zero hours contracts.
Site Background
The proposed development site is located to the west of Aylesbury Road, directly adjacent to the Travelodge Support office. Currently, the site comprises a three storey office building with a warehouse to the rear.
The proposed development will therefore bring a new, affordable discount shopping provision and improve the visual amenity of the surrounding area.
