Thame’s Best Takeaway – Chippy – Round 5 – Smarts Fish & Chips

Not to rest on our laurels in the Thame’s Best Takeaway review, we move swiftly onto the challenge of finding Thame’s best Chippy.

With Ming’s Chinese Takeaway winning the Chinese section of the review, would it be Smarts Fish & Chip Shop or The Chippy which joins them in the winners final of Thame’s Best Takeaway.

To keep the review fair we decided that  a medium cod and chips should be ordered from each Chippy. The review will be based upon not only what’s the best quality, taste and portion size, but also what is best value for money.

So first up for our foodie in the Chippy review is Smarts Fish & Chip Shop.

“As I entered Thame town centre at 6.00pm on Saturday evening, the first thing I noticed was the big crowds drawn to the new Kebab Van in town, and this was perhaps reflected in the customers in Smarts as there were only two others waiting for their dinner.

I placed my order towards the right hand side of the shop and was given a order number, very nice! £5.00 for a medium cod and chips felt about right, and certainly wouldn’t hit your wallet as hard as a Chinese takeaway might.  Not even 2 minutes later my number was called and I was on my way out of Smarts with my dinner in tow.

As i emptied the cod and chips onto my plate, it seemed like a well balanced portion size for a medium cod and chips. The first things i noticed were that the cod batter was a lovely golden brown colour, the chips too. Some chips from chip shops can look slightly anemic but these had just the right amount of colour to them.

The Cod was deep fried but not too greasy, and had a lovely crisp finish to it. There was also a very good fish to batter proportion.

The chips were perfect, not too salty and just enough vinegar. There were even a few smaller crispy chips near the bottom, which I love when you get chips from a chip shop.

So on the whole at £5.00 for a medium cod and chips, and ticking all the right boxes for a ” chippy tea”, it was a solid start for Smarts in the chippy category. If The Chippy can come in at the same level as Smarts this is going to be a tough category to pick a winner!”

Stay tuned for round 6 of Thame’s Best Takeaway Review, where we will be taking a trip to The Chippy.
