The Official Petition of the Thame Haddenham Greenway was handed in at 10 Downing Street yesterday (3 February 2026), following work led by Freddie van Mierlo MP. The petition calls on the Government to support the delivery of a safe and accessible greenway linking the town of Thame with the village of Haddenham.
The petition has received more than 3,630 signatures, demonstrating strong public support for a safe and traffic free route between the two communities. At present, the A418 is the only direct connection and is fast and heavily trafficked, making it unsuitable and unsafe for walking, cycling or wheeling. Residents are left with no viable non-motorised alternative.
Local communities have been calling for a safe connection for more than 25 years, yet no suitable provision has been delivered. A dedicated greenway would address this long-standing infrastructure gap by providing a safe and inclusive route for children, commuters, families and recreational users.
The proposed greenway would support active travel, improve road safety, reduce congestion and emissions, and strengthen access to key local destinations, including schools, shops and Haddenham and Thame Parkway station.
Freddie van Mierlo MP handed in the petition at 10 Downing Street, accompanied by Oxfordshire County Councillor Kate Gregory, Thame Mayor Andy Gilbert, Greg Smith MP, and representatives of local active travel campaigns.
Commenting on the petition, Freddie van Mierlo MP said:
“Presenting this petition at 10 Downing Street sends a clear message that residents expect action. For decades people have asked for a safe route between Thame and Haddenham, and this level of public support shows just how important this issue is locally. A greenway would make everyday journeys safer, healthier and more sustainable, and I will continue to press for this vital link to be delivered.”
Councillor Kate Gregory added:
“This petition reflects years of concern from residents about the lack of a safe route between Thame and Haddenham. A greenway would give people confidence to walk, cycle or wheel for everyday journeys, while delivering clear benefits for health, safety and the environment. It is a sensible and achievable project that deserves serious commitment.”
