The Buildbase FA Vase First Round Qualifying - 11 September 2016
Thame United 5 Tadley Calleva 1
Thame United progressed to the Second Round Qualifying of the FA Vase with a comfortable 5-1 win against Wessex League opponents Tadley Calleva on Sunday afternoon.
The opening twenty minutes of the match was full of incident, with United almost taking the lead inside the first two minutes - Andy Gledhill heading wide from six yards when well placed. However, the first goal arrived only two minutes later with Lynton Goss finishing well from close range.
Tadley then enjoyed probably their best spell of the game, culminating in a penalty on 10 minutes when David Lynn was adjudged to have fouled an attacking player as the ball came in to the box. However, Henry Craven in the Thame goal pulled off a fine saving, diving away to his left, and smothering the follow-up. The let-off stirred United in to action again and then lead was extended on 14 minutes with Gledhill squaring the ball for Goss to fire in to the roof of the net. Goss completed his hat-trick on 19 minutes, again finishing from close range and, to all intents and purposes, ending the match as a contest. Further chances came for United, with Gledhill going close and Dan West striking an effort from 25 yards that the visiting keeper tipped over the bar.
With United 3-0 to the good at half-time, they started the second half in a similar vein and extended the lead on 53 minutes with Goss squaring for Melvy Nsomi (who had replaced Luke Ricketts at half-time) to finish in to an open goal. Whilst United continued to press, with Gledhill seeing an effort come back off the post on 61 minutes, Tadley gradually saw more of the ball, but they were rarely able to threaten Craven. And it was United who then scored their fifth. Andy Gledhill saw an effort from the edge of the box parried by the visiting keeper but as he went to strike the rebound he was upended and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty. Gledhill took the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way.
The visitors got some reward for their efforts in the final few minutes, with a 25 yard free kick coming back off the bar before being forced home from close range.
The victory now sees United travelling to Royal Wootton Bassett Town in the Second Round on 24th September.
