Creativity was in full bloom at this month’s meeting of the Thame Library Writing Group, where members shared an eclectic mix of poetry and musings on the craft of writing.
The session was a serendipitous convergence of poetry, featuring an intriguing range of works. Members explored the evocative art of erasure poetry, where meaning is uncovered by selectively removing words from an existing text. Other contributions included a vivid poem inspired by a Christmas Eve dream that appeared fully formed on the page and a work-in-progress sparked by a newly discovered poet.
The Origins of Inspiration
The group delved into a lively discussion about the mysterious sources of creative ideas. From waking in the night with a verse ready to be written to crafting epic plots like Harry Potter — a story deeply rooted in mythology, folklore, and timeless themes — they reflected on the enduring appeal of narratives that feel both fresh and eternal.
Can AI Replace Writers?
Conversation turned to the challenges and emotions of writing, particularly in genres like Romantic Fiction, where authors often delve deeply into their own feelings. Members also debated whether artificial intelligence could one day replace human writers in predictable genres. While AI might generate competent prose, the consensus leaned toward the irreplaceable depth and nuance of human creativity.
