Thame Carnival 2025 to Bring VE Day Spirit and Community Celebration to Life

9th June 2025

The heart of Thame will once again beat to the rhythm of music, history, and community spirit as the town gears up for Thame Carnival 2025, an eagerly anticipated annual event that raises funds for local charities and brings residents together in a colourful celebration of local life.

This year’s festivities, held on Saturday, June 14th from 12pm to 4:30pm at Southern Road Recreation Ground, will commemorate VE Day in grand style. Highlights include a Lancaster bomber fly-past, a mini tank, WWII Jeeps, and a host of historical displays, promising a powerful and poignant link to the past.

Star-Studded Local Line-Up

The entertainment programme is as vibrant as ever, with live performances from:

  • Maria Scobey, seasoned vocalist and founder of A BIG VOICE, delivering soulful and dynamic renditions.
  • Sandra Brooks, a local fitness legend, who will bring energy and fun with line dancing.
  • Je T’hame, a retro covers band fronted by Thame Mayor Andy Gilbert, playing classics from the '60s and '70s.
  • William Scobey, a 16-year-old musical prodigy blending genres from Queen to Massive Attack.

Charities at the Heart

Thame Carnival continues its tradition of giving back. This year’s chosen charities are:

  • Thame Citizens Advice – offering free, impartial advice to residents across Oxfordshire.
  • Maggie’s Oxford – supporting people affected by cancer.
  • Florence Nightingale Hospice – delivering compassionate end-of-life care across Buckinghamshire.

Each charity will have a presence at the event, offering visitors the chance to learn more and contribute directly to their causes.

Parade and Attractions

The day begins with a lively parade at 12 noon, starting from Elms Park and winding its way to the Recreation Ground. Expect local schools, community groups, military vehicles, and even Heather the Hedgehog from Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital.

At the Recreation Ground, guests can enjoy:

  • A giant bouncy castle, go-karts, and fairground rides
  • Tombolas, raffles, egg throwing, and a variety of multicultural food stalls
  • The Pimms Tent, the Round Table Bar, and the Rotary BBQ
  • A dramatic car-chopping demonstration by the Thame Fire Service

A Community Effort

Organised by 21st Century Thame and a dedicated team of volunteers, the Carnival is made possible thanks to generous local sponsors, including BP Collins (headline sponsor), Lucy Electric, ASM, Freedom Creative, and Lightfoots Solicitors.

Special guest Eddy Smythe will open the Carnival and judge the parade. Eddy is the son of the late John Smythe QC, OBE, MBE, a WWII RAF navigator and influential post-war figure, honoured this year as part of the VE Day celebrations.

You are warmly invited to attend Death Cafe in Thame. at 7:30pm in room 1 of the Barns Centre, and held on the third Thursday of each month thereafter A Death Cafe is an informal gathering where people can discuss death over tea and cake. We’re aiming to normalise the topic of death, raise acceptance, and help people make the most of their lives by breaking the taboo around mortality. It is not a grief support group or counselling session. These sessions have no agenda, objectives, or themes, allowing for organic, group-directed conversations about anything related to death, from end-of-life planning to fears and feelings, fostering open sharing in a respectful, confidential space. Death Cafe is run on a not-for-profit basis but if you are able to make…
