We have received reports of a scam circulating in the Vale of the White Horse and South Oxfordshire area, where residents are receiving phone calls from someone posing to be a police officer, advising recipients that there has been fraudulent activity at their bank and they believe that the bank are using fake bank notes. The recipient is asked to withdraw money from their account and take the cash home. They then receive another call asking for the serial numbers on the bank notes, where they confirm that they are fake bank notes and that they will send a courier to come and pick them up.
The notes were not fake and the recipients lost their money.
The police and other reputable organisations will never ask you to withdraw money or to move money to a safe account. They will not ask you to reveal your banking PIN, password or send anyone to your house to collect cards or cash.
Challenge any questions whereby you think the call could be fake. It is ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests and hang up. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you. Do not share your information.
