Lucy Electric employees in Thame rolled their sleeves up to help John Hampden school tidy up their gardens and build two amazing bug hotels for the children!

Local Thame Primary school John Hampden has two very large gardens which had sadly overgrown due to the children and staff not being on site as much over the last two years. Their millennium garden was totally overgrown with weeds and some areas of the gardens completely inaccessible. The school were delighted when staff in Lucy Electric got in touch about building a couple of bug hotels for the children, but when they saw the gardens, they decided they could do a lot more!

10 volunteers from Lucy Electric, spent half a day removing an old broken green house, clearing overgrown vegetation, weeding, and building two amazing bug hotels to encourage the children in learning about the natural world.

Lucy Electric Thame’s site gardeners Shield Group also came along and volunteered as well using their specialist equipment to strim and cleared large parts of the gardens.  The Schools ‘eco group’ were also involved much to their delight in filling up the bug hotels learning along the way about biodiversity and eco systems. They had fun putting snails in the bug hotel and naming them! The large planters are now clear of weeds and the earth has been turned. One planter will be given to each year group to look after, they will be planting flowers and growing vegetables.

Both the children and the volunteers worked extremely hard, laughed, and learnt a lot and were generally worn out in the end of the day.  It was a fantastic and very productive morning helping the local community, contributing to the education of children, and helping to increase local biodiversity.
