Freddie van Mierlo, MP for Henley and Thame, has raised concerns with the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) about the negative impact of Brexit on businesses in the Thames Valley. Speaking in the House of Commons this week, Freddie called on the government to take action to address the significant challenges local businesses have faced since Brexit.
During a recent meeting with business leaders from the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, Freddie was concerned by the overwhelming feedback that Brexit has severely disrupted local businesses. As one of the country's most vital economic regions, the Thames Valley has faced significant challenges, particularly in terms of cross-border trade and the added regulatory friction with the European Union. Modern manufacturing requires components to cross borders multiple times before a finished product is made. Red tape is stopping businesses from working in this way, limiting growth and our regions potential.
The meeting highlighted widespread frustrations among business owners who reported increased costs, delays, and uncertainty due to the new trade barriers. Many businesses in the region, which are heavily reliant on smooth trade with EU partners, have found themselves struggling with the consequences of Brexit.
Freddie van Mierlo is calling on the government to address these issues and explore the possibility of joining a customs union with the EU to ease the economic burden placed on local businesses. The move would allow for smoother trade, reduce costs, and provide the stability that Thames Valley businesses need to succeed in the global marketplace.
Commenting on the issue, Freddie van Mierlo said:
"The Thames Valley is one of the most important economic regions in the country. At a recent meeting with business leaders, the overwhelming message was that Brexit has had a detrimental impact on local businesses. Many businesses feel let down by the decisions made by Boris Johnson and the Conservative government. It's time to address this issue and begin negotiations to join a customs union with the European Union."
