How UK businesses can strengthen remote work security in 2025

Remote workers can offer incredible productivity, especially compared to office work. Unfortunately, there can be unforeseen issues with cybersecurity and keeping various files and data confidential. Read our guide and learn how your business can strengthen its remote work security in 2025.

Common cybersecurity threats in remote work models

When your team work remotely, there are several cybersecurity threats that they can encounter. The main threats include phishing, unsecured WiFi, device loss, and data breaches.

Phishing

These types of scams typically pose as trusted sources (like a manager or CEO) and attempt to elicit private information. This information is then either sold or used to gain access to confidential systems and gain further access to private documents and data.

Unsecured WiFi

When connected to an unsecured network, your data travels unprotected through an internet access point. This point may be monitored, giving the owner a copy of all the data that passes through it, including usernames, passwords, and more. Of course, you can protect against this with a VPN, which encrypts all your traffic and protects it from prying eyes.

Access management and secure connections

To get around the most common threats, you can make use of several additional security measures, like 2-Factor Authentication and encrypted channels. 2-Factor Authentication is when a trusted device (like a mobile number or email address) gets sent a unique code to approve a sign-in attempt. This is crucial to preventing unauthorised access to systems, especially if you use specific authentication apps, like Google Authenticator.

Additionally, you can use encrypted channels like Virtual Private Networks (or VPNs) to protect a device’s web traffic. A VPN works by encoding your internet requests and sending them to another machine. This means that your data is protected from anyone attempting to spy on it.

Building a security-first culture

To further strengthen your security, you should build a security-first culture in your workplace. Some simple ways to enforce this include not letting people in the building without their work ID or making sure computers are locked when not in use. You should also encourage the use of complex and unique passwords. Since these can be difficult to remember, we encourage using a business password manager. This can give your team safe and secure access to accounts, without the risk of writing them down on a post-it note.

To take it one step further, you can give your team regular training on the latest phishing scams and other forms of attacks that hackers may use to steal confidential data. You might also want to encourage employees to be upfront if they may have caused an issue, as this gives you a chance to rectify it.
