Oxfordshire County Council is providing free park and ride bus journeys in Oxford for an initial period of three months from 29 October, when the city’s temporary congestion charge scheme starts.
The council has decided that this is one way that income from the temporary congestion charge scheme will be spent. Up to two adults and three children with a valid park and ride parking ticket will be able to claim free travel to and from park and ride sites in the city. The tickets will be valid on any Stagecoach, Oxford Bus Company or Thames Travel bus that visits an Oxford park and ride site, not just named park and ride services.
Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Management, said: “I’m very happy to be able to offer this great saving and incentive to use our park and ride services, helping us all move around the city faster, thanks to the temporary congestion charge. The congestion charge is also set to bring a whole host of new and improved bus services, laid on by bus companies, with the Oxford Bus Company announcing its changes today.
“This will support local businesses in the run up to Christmas and beyond, helping more visitors come and enjoy our fabulous city.”
The temporary congestion charge is a short-term measure to reduce traffic while Botley Road remains closed, which is preventing the start of the council’s traffic filter trial. The temporary initiative will contribute towards creating a healthier, more accessible and attractive city. It is designed to improve bus services and make it easier for those with permits, including carers, traders and blue badge holders, to travel by car into and around Oxford, and improve air quality in the city.
The temporary congestion charge will be at points on six roads in Oxford. Cars with permits and all other vehicles can pass through the charge locations for free. Without a permit, a charge of £5 per day will be payable to drive a car through the six congestion charge locations.
There are many different permit types available that allow free travel through the congestion charge points. Permit applications can now be made from the county council website covering different circumstances, including for traders, carers and blue badge holders.
