Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. It was founded on the three grand principles of brotherly love, relief and truth.
In 2017 Freemasonry celebrated the Tercentenary of the forming of the world`s first Grand Lodge, when four London Lodges met up. Today there is over 6.5 Million Freemasons worldwide.
Thame’s Hampden Lodge is a Freemasons lodge who meet five times a year, on a Friday, where they conduct various different ceremonies. In many ways these are like plays, with the aim of helping a member understand more about aspects of Freemasonry such as, morality, nature and science. Along with the ceremonies, they also work together to help local and National charities as well as enjoying a social aspect.
Hampden Lodge was officially created on the 12th of September 1946 and meets at Thame's Masonic Hall in the centre of the town. The lodge takes its name from John Hampden (ca. 1595 - 1643), and is part of the Masonic Province of Oxfordshire. Something which makes the Thame Freemasons unique is that when they meet, the partners and wives of the members of Hampden Lodge also arrange to meet up for a meal locally.
