Sadly, ash trees in Cox’s Wood are dying from ash dieback, a wind-borne fungal disease that is spreading across the country. Most of the ash along the permissive footpath through the middle of this wood will be felled before they become too brittle and fall over. Already some trees have died, dead branches are breaking off and felling is planned to take place in the next few weeks.
Groups of lime, hazel, field maple and other species of trees will be planted by the volunteers in suitable gaps where there is light and space to grow. Natural regeneration will also help fill the gaps. The area will remain woodland.
