If you have taken a wander through Cuttle Brook over the past two weeks during the sunny weather you may have noticed that things are looking a little different! The Cuttle Brook Conservation Volunteers have been busy creating a new backwater in the Nontron Meadows (located near the Oxford Road entrance to Cuttle Brook). This forms part of a major project, approved by the Environment Agency, which the volunteers are undertaking at Cuttle Brook Nature Reserve this year. The new backwater will create a spawning area for fish and a habitat for other wildlife too. The dumped soil, from excavating the old river channel, was used to create a bank for a new native hedge to be planted later in the autumn.
To help out with upcoming projects and to stay up to date with Cuttle Brook, go to cuttlebrook.org.uk or find them on Facebook and Twitter. The work parties meet on the third Sunday and last Wednesday of each month, and would welcome new volunteers.
