New figures released for February 2025 reveal violence and sexual offences as the most reported crimes in Thame, with 32 incidents recorded. Other frequently reported crimes included theft (10 incidents), anti-social behaviour (8 incidents), and criminal damage and arson (8 incidents).
The Thame Neighbourhood Team has been actively working to address these issues, focusing on three key priorities: anti-social behaviour, violence against women and girls, and retail crime.
Targeting Anti-Social Behaviour in Elms Park and Town Centre
Responding to public concerns, officers have intensified patrols in Elms Park and Thame Town Centre, leading to several successful stop-and-search operations uncovering controlled drugs. Police secured a prosecution for a racially aggravated public order offence and took action against a motorcyclist causing extensive criminal damage while operating without a license or insurance. Recent efforts have also resulted in an arrest for conspiracy to supply controlled drugs and charges for motor vehicle thefts linked to offenders from the Oxford area. Increased patrols were also deployed in Wheatley following complaints about e-scooter misuse and general anti-social behaviour, with support from local schools to prevent further incidents.
Violence Against Women and Girls: Ongoing Night-Time Patrols
In efforts to make the town centre safer, especially for women and girls, the team continues to patrol the Night Time Economy areas and work closely with the local Pub-Watch scheme. Weekly licensing meetings ensure early intervention at problem venues. A Community Protection Warning was recently issued to an individual for inappropriate behaviour toward women. Operation Marzipan, which focused on patrolling pubs, takeaways, taxi ranks, and transport hubs, has been hailed a success. Insights from a recent community survey are also being used to inform future policing strategies.
Tackling Retail Crime
Retail crime has been another major focus. Officers successfully secured multiple charges for shoplifting in the last quarter and organized a dedicated week of action targeting retail theft and repeat offenders. The DISC app continues to be promoted among retailers to enhance crime reporting and offender identification. One notable success involved charging a prolific offender for theft from a disabled person. Looking ahead, the team is preparing for major upcoming events like the Thame 10k and Thame Street Fair to maintain community engagement and safety.
Crime Levels in Context
Crime levels have remained relatively stable over the past year, with a total of 96 incidents reported in October 2024 alone. Police encourage residents to continue reporting incidents and participating in community safety initiatives.
