A GOLFER from Oxfordshire will attempt to play 200 holes of golf in just one day to help raise funds and awareness of motor neurone disease (MND).
Roger Longshaw, a member of The Oxfordshire Golf Club in Thame, will take part in the event on Friday 17 July, with play starting at around 4.30am and ending at 9.45pm. In between, Roger is expected to cover a distance of around 65 miles and 4,500ft of elevation – the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis.
The challenge is just one of the events taking place at the club as part of its Captain’s Charity Day which has been organised by club captain, Chris Webb. Chris has chosen to support the MND Association – the largest MND charity in the UK – in memory of his brother-in-law Dave who died from MND, a terminal neurological disease in 2022.
“Seeing what Dave, and my sister went through was awful and I’m determined to do what I can to help raise money to support others. It’s something which is very close to me.
“Roger is extremely fit and he’s really looking forward to this challenge. He has taken part in endurance events like this before but has never sought donations so this is very much a one-off.
“His quickest training rounds have been around 60 minutes, but this won’t be sustainable to the duration of the challenge so he’ll be looking at consistent rounds of 85 minutes. At the same time, they’ll be an 18-hole charity tournament which will start at 9.30am.”
The MND Association’s Luke Robson, who is supporting Chris and the team with their fundraising said the event in July would make a huge difference to people living with MND and their families.
He said: “In the time it takes Roger to complete his incredible challenge, six people in the UK will have been told they have MND, and in that moment, life changes forever.
“Thanks to the efforts of people like Roger, Chris and the players at The Oxfordshire Golf Club, we can help to fund more research which gets us closer to the development of potential new treatments for people with this devastating disease.
“We are so grateful for everything the team at the club is doing and wish them all the very best of luck for the day.”
