As you may have already heard; Thame has been named as one of Britain's best high streets by being shortlisted in the third annual Great British High Street competition.
Thame High Street has been named alongside Chipping Norton and Hebden Bridge as one of the top 3 in the Small Market Town category.
As well as this Chris Hurdman, has also been named alongside Nicola Martin (Ashton under Lyne) and Beverley Milner Simonds (Burnham on Sea, Somerset) as one of the top 3 in the Retail Market Champion category.
So let’s get voting – lets prove to Britain what we already know - that Thame has the best high street in Britain.
This year’s competition saw a record 900 entries across all 14 categories, including the new categories for individuals and shops. Now the shortlist has been drawn up and the public has the chance to vote directly for their best-loved high street online. Between now and November 18, you can cast your vote for free.
High Streets Minister Andrew Percy said:
“Our high streets are the life and soul of towns, villages and cities across the country and the record number of competition entries this year is proof of their continued importance to local life.
“There are bustling high streets up and down the country from North London to Northumberland and now is the time you can show support for your local area and get voting”.
Peter Aldis, Chief Executive Office of Holland & Barrett International said:
“We are proud to be supporting this celebration of the greatest that the British high street has to offer. Looking at the finalists, it’s going to be a tough competition, but I’m excited to see examples of the innovation and community spirit that made our British high streets the institutions they are today.”
The Great British High Street Competition 2016 celebrates the great work that is being done to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets. It is one of a number of initiatives to help champion high streets as the cornerstones of the community.
The best small market town high street will get a share of a prize pot worth £100,000 and expert training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a trip to Twitter UK’s London office to boost their social media skills.
Alongside the public’s votes shortlisted small market towns will also be inspected by judges from Holland and Barrett International, an industry leader in retail, and Europe's leading retailer of Vitamins, Minerals and Herbal Supplements. Holland & Barrett stores are a familiar sight in almost every major city and town across the United Kingdom and Ireland, where they operate over 700 outlets with over 7,000 employees. Further afield, Holland & Barrett International has focussed on international growth through a combination of owned stores and franchising, operating the brand in over 11 foreign markets from China to Gibraltar.
The second Great British High Street competition last year saw 230 entries and attracted over 200,000 public votes, with Bishy Road in York, a former finalist, crowned Britain’s best. Bishy Road found that winning not only boosted town pride, but also had a tangible economic impact with retailers reporting increased footfall.
