Would you like to meet a RIO 2016 Olympic Gold medalist?

Would you like to meet a RIO 2016 Olympic Gold medalist?

If so then get down to Thame Hockey Club's "Hockey Fest" this Saturday and you could meet Hollie Webb.

Hollie won gold at the Olympic games, along with her Team GB team mates following a dramatic penalty shoot out against the Netherlands in which she scored the decisive penalty.

Hollie started at Belper hockey club after they advertised their Sunday morning junior sessions at the local primary schools, falling in love with the sport from the very first session. From there she followed it all the way to making her England debut against South Africa in Cape Town in 2013, just before finishing her degree in Economics from the University of Sheffield. Webb is a superb defender with a mean hit and a European gold medal.
A fan of being active, Hollie also enjoyed netball in school and other sports outside of hockey, as well as coaching local youngsters when she's not playing. 2016 saw Webb shoot into the public consciousness as her ice-cool temperament under pressure allowed her to slot in the winner in the shootout in the Olympic final, sparking wild scenes and ensuring GB came home with a gold medal.

Details of Thame Hockey's event are below:

Saturday 10th September:

The purpose of this free event will be to throw open the pitch to the local community, encourage local hockey fans and people who are interested in finding out more about the club to play some hockey and most importantly to have some fun!

“Our Club and this event are open to all – from new, ex or current members and players of all ages to parents and volunteers. People don’t have to play hockey to be part of our club as there are plenty of other opportunities to be part of their local club community. Following GB’s success at Rio’s 2016 Olympic Games, we aim to inspire more players, volunteers and social members to come together and get into hockey. We promise a warm and welcoming atmosphere” says Clifford Brown, Chairman of the club.

There will be a junior session in the morning consisting of:

  • Under 8 and Under 10 sessions from 10:00 -11:00 with warm up, a few simple practice drills and then into mini games
  • Under 12 and Under 14 sessions from 11:00 - 12:00 following a similar approach

A mini tournament for adults is planned for the afternoon from 13:00 to 15:00 with informal drinks afterwards. Refreshments, music, and games to enjoy from 10:00 to 15:00. Please come along and invite your friends and family.

Whether you are getting back into hockey or picking up a stick for the first time, anyone can come along and give hockey a go. Thame Hockey Club can be found at the Thame Leisure Centre astro turf, Oxford Road, Thame, OX9 2BB.

Thame Hockey Club is a local community club with 3 men's teams, 3 ladies' teams, and a thriving junior section.
