Help save Britain’s hedgehogs with ‘hedgehog highways’!

This week is Hedgehog Awareness Week ! Last week 21st Century Thame launched a new initiative in Thame to create more hedgehog highways in Thame. We started with a gathering of 10 people last week 26th April 2023 and we discussed a huge variety of work that we could get going on.

We are meeting again next Wednesday 10th May where we will decide on which of the great ideas we will act upon first.

EVERYONE is WELCOME to join us. The more people involved – the more highways we can create right now when the hedgehogs are out and about.

If you would like to find out more please to contact [email protected] and we will happily meet you individually to discuss whether this project might be right for you or you can just pop along to the meeting.

OUR PROJECT SO FAR

There was appetite for the following types of projects :

  • Lobbying – new home builds, allotments, pet stores / garden centres, councils
  • Education – encouraging residents to feed, water, nurture, protect
  • Highway – holes in fences, linking green spaces, homes
  • Hedgehog Champions – one per street, ‘Hedgehog Friendly Town’
  • Mapping – registration of highway holes, sighting
  • Events – Thame Carnival (parade / stall), Big Green Week (same week as carnival)

Goals – we need to give ourselves some goals to work towards – suggestions were :

  • Increase the number of hedgehog champions registered on Hedgehog Streets
  • Increase the number of hedgehog highway holes registered on Hedgehog Streets
  • Connect 1000 Thame homes

Gathering intelligence – there is a lot already going on nationally and regionally – we need to make our activity local to Thame – but harness everything around us.  So we need to gather together information about the activity and decide which we will utilise for our goals and our activities.

Come join us for some fun this summer helping our hedgehog community.

Contact [email protected] or come along Wednesday 10th May 7.30pm in Racquets Fitness Centre bar (behind the Cattle Market in Thame).
