About the A40 improvements
We’re investing in six major schemes, which will deliver a new park and ride, an extension of the dual carriageway around Witney, new bus lanes and junction improvements.
Our proposed plans to address traffic and transport issues will result in better transport links, the creation of new jobs and housing, reduced emissions, and more sustainable travel options.

What you can expect
Two of the schemes within the A40 improvements work (A40 Oxford North and Eynsham park and ride) have already progressed past consultation.
The initial proposals are now complete for the A40 HIF2 Smart Corridor (Duke’s Cut, integrated bus lanes and the extension of the dual carriageway) and Access to Witney. We want to hear what you think about them, to help inform the next phase of design.
We’re asking for feedback on the schemes separately.
The A40 HIF2 Smart Corridor exhibition explains how upgrades to the carriageways and the addition of bus lanes and enhancements to walking and cycling facilities will make it easier, and safer to travel.
The Access to Witney exhibition explains how improvements to the Shores Green junction will improve access to the town centre and reduce congestion in the area.
In each exhibition, you can also sign up to a webinar, which will explain the schemes and answer your questions. The webinars will be held on:
- Monday 17 May (A40 HIF2 Smart Corridor)
- Tuesday 18 May (Access to Witney)
- Saturday 22 May (A40 HIF2 Smart Corridor and Access to Witney)
How it is being funded
The programme is £180m of investment in the A40 corridor. Funding has been secured from several partners, notably:
- Department for Transport retained Local Growth Fund (LGF)
- Homes England Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF)
- Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership
- The Housing Growth Deal (HGD)
- various S106 developer contributions.
