The Players Theatre and Thame Museum are staging a Victorian Christmas
event between November and December featuring Victorian imagery and
displays, Christmas-related activities for children, and readings of festive
stories and poems by members of Thame Players. All the events and
activities being held are completely free to take part in and entry to the
Museum is also free.
Thame Museum, recently named as Oxfordshire Museum of the Year 2020,
has put together a Victorian-themed Christmas event with creative activities
for all the family to enjoy. These include a festive fun day for children
during which kids are invited to try their hand at making Christmas decorations,
traditional pomanders and even bagging up reindeer food. Other events include hand-bell ringing and painting for Christmas, while Father Christmas himself will appear at the Museum on Saturday 14th and Saturday 21st December.
A centrepiece of the Victorian Christmas event will be a series of Victorian and festive readings by members of Thame Players at the Museum between 30th November and 11th December. Ten actors from the Players Theatre, suitably costumed in Victorian attire, will be reading stories, poems and extracts by famous authors, including Charles Dickens, Joyce Grenfell, Laurie Lee and Robert Louis Stevenson. Readings will be made on the half hour and you can listen to recitations from seasonal pieces such as ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, ‘Letters from Father Christmas’, ’A Child’s View of Christmas’, ‘Queen Victoria’s Christmas’, and readings to amuse including contemporary pieces such as Pam Ayres on ‘Goodwill to Men’, ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ and many more.
To get fully into the Christmas spirit and take part in all the Victorian-themed festive jollity, just come to Thame Museum between 30th November and 21st December (check opening times at www.thamemuseum.org) and you’ll be sure to find something to enjoy that suits every taste!
