Update from Thames Water on essential works in Wellington Street

15th January 2026

Please see the below update from Thames Water:

We wanted to share an update on the next stage of work taking place on Wellington Street. As you may know, we’ve been fixing a defect in the foul water sewer. Phase 1 wrapped up in mid-December, but during investigations we found additional issues that need attention.

To keep disruption to a minimum over the festive period, we paused work and returned last week (from 6th January) to start Phase 2. This stage is expected to take around five weeks, followed by a week of overnight work to help future-proof the sewer.

What’s happening now?

  • The road closure has moved slightly further down Wellington Street towards North Street.
  • Pedestrian and property access will remain open.
  • First, we’ll rebuild a manhole chamber and stabilise the ground within the closure. Once that’s done, we’ll remove the closure and move on to lining sections of the sewer.
  • Lining involves inserting a sleeve inside the existing pipe to strengthen it.
  • This lining work will require some overnight closures on Wellington Street to facilitate access to the sewer, but local access to properties will still be maintained.

You might notice extra noise or activity at times, and occasionally we’ll need to use pumps or tankers to manage flows and prevent flooding. Our engineers may also work extended hours to keep things on track.

We’re aiming to finish by 20 February, but we’ll keep you updated if there are any changes to our programme.
Your water and wastewater services won’t be affected – you can use water and flush toilets as normal.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out these essential works. If you have any questions, please call our 24-hour customer centre on 0800 316 9800, quoting your address and reference number BB01271812.

You are warmly invited to attend Death Cafe in Thame. at 7:30pm in room 1 of the Barns Centre, and held on the third Thursday of each month thereafter A Death Cafe is an informal gathering where people can discuss death over tea and cake. We’re aiming to normalise the topic of death, raise acceptance, and help people make the most of their lives by breaking the taboo around mortality. It is not a grief support group or counselling session. These sessions have no agenda, objectives, or themes, allowing for organic, group-directed conversations about anything related to death, from end-of-life planning to fears and feelings, fostering open sharing in a respectful, confidential space. Death Cafe is run on a not-for-profit basis but if you are able to make…
