Lidl ‘Delighted’ as Plans Submitted for First Thame Store

17th November 2025

  • Lidl GB has submitted plans for a new store on Aylesbury Road in Thame
  • News comes as over 90% respondents came out in support of the proposals highlighting the access to best value products, job creation, and removing the need to travel out of town that the new Lidl store would bring.
  • If approved, the store would mark the first Lidl store in the area which would also serve Thame and the surrounding area.
  • Demand for the discounter continues to grow as Lidl announces record market growth in its latest financial results with 38 million more customers visiting across the country

Following a successful consultation, Lidl has submitted plans for its first ever store in Thame on Aylesbury Road. Over 90% of respondents confirmed their support for a new discount supermarket which would deliver affordable, high-quality products and up to 40 new jobs for local people.

Those in favour of the plans noted that although "Thame and the surrounding areas are in growth, services continue to be in short supply".  Others responded to the discounter's survey stating that "we need you in Thame", highlighting the improved access the new Lidl store would bring, removing the need for shoppers to travel all the way to Aylesbury or Oxford just for their weekly shop. The strong pedestrian, bus and cycling connections, which would greatly benefit those without access to a vehicle, were also welcomed by supporters.

The multi-million pound investment would deliver a modern discount supermarket featuring the much-loved Lidl in-store bakery, popular middle aisle, and customer toilets with baby-changing facilities. Outside, the plans include rapid electric vehicle charging points, covered bicycle parking, and dedicated accessible and parent-and-child parking bays. Solar panels on the stores roof would help to power the store. Additionally, following feedback from the local community, Lidl has also updated their plans to include a swale and balancing pond to provide improved drainage and flood mitigation for the site and neighbouring area.

Kate Bleloch, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: "We're delighted to have completed this step and submit planning to deliver our very first Lidl store to serve Thame. We've listened to residents and it's clear the access to best value products, job creation, and removing the need to travel out of town are just some of the many key reasons to back Lidl at this site. Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to make their voices heard and we look forward to receiving a planning decision in due course."

For more than three decades, Lidl has continually delivered its unbeatable combination of quality and affordability to shoppers across Great Britain. In its latest financial results, ending 28th February 2025, Lidl highlighted the scale of its growth in the last financial year, all while continuing to invest in colleagues, suppliers and communities across Great Britain. During the period, 38 million more customer visits were made to the discounter than in the year prior1 and Lidl maintained its position as the fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar grocer, a title it has now held for more than two years.
