Lib Dems officially launch campaign in Henley and Thame

The Liberal Democrats officially launched their campaign for the Henley and Thame constituency on Friday evening to a large and optimistic audience in Benson.

Four weeks out from election day, Freddie van Mierlo, who is standing as the Liberal Democrat candidate, was joined by over 80 supporters to officially launch his General Election campaign.

Freddie van Mierlo lives in Henley with his wife and family and is already a hard-working local County and District Councillor. Freddie was joined by a number of local Lib Dem Councillors and a wealth of supporters who believe that this General Election has the potential to be a historic moment in the Henley and Thame constituency.

Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate Freddie van Mierlo said:

“The response we’re getting on the doorstep is incredibly positive and many of the people I have spoken to believe it’s time for a change.

“I’m angry about the state of our public services and after talking to many residents over the last few months, I’m not the only one. Hospitals, schools, and roads are crumbling, and the police don’t have the resources they need to respond to crime.”

The local campaign will be accompanied by the Henley and Thame Battle Bus, an old American style school bus owned by a local campaigner. On his tour across the constituency, Freddie will be talking to thousands of people about his plan to represent residents and fight hard to improve our health service, protect our countryside and wildlife, and improve the quality of our rivers.

Layla Moran, Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Oxford West and Abingdon said:

"The mood in Henley and Thame is very similar to how it felt in Oxford West & Abingdon when I won the seat by just a few hundred votes in June 2017. Everyone who wants to see the Conservatives defeated needs to vote for Freddie this time."

Recent opinion polls show that Freddie is neck and neck with the Conservatives in the constituency.

In a First Past the Post electoral system, many people have become more aware of tactical voting as a mechanism to beat the Conservatives here, and Carol Vorderman, in a recent interview with Politics Joe quoted that in Henley and Thame the tactical vote is the Lib Dems.

The General Election is on the 4 July and you need to be registered to vote to take part, it is also the first General Election where you will need photo voter ID and you can find the list of what’s included here.

We’re aiming to normalise the topic of death, raise acceptance, and help people make the most of their lives by breaking the taboo around mortality. It is not a grief support group or counselling session. These sessions have no agenda, objectives, or themes, allowing for organic, group-directed conversations about anything related to death, from end-of-life planning to fears and feelings, fostering open sharing in a respectful, confidential space. Death Cafe is run on a not-for-profit basis but if you are able to make…
