People living with Parkinson’s in Thame and Wheatley are being invited to try free Boxercise sessions this month as part of a new initiative from Parkinson’s UK and local exercise teacher Ali Bell.
The Boxercise for Parkinson’s taster sessions are designed to provide gentle exercise that can help people manage symptoms. Classes can be adapted to individual needs, with exercises suitable for both standing and seated participants.
No previous experience is required, and people with Parkinson’s are welcome to attend with a family member, friend or carer.
Thame sessions
Sessions in Thame will take place at Thame Town Cricket Club, Church Meadow, Church Road, on:
- Wednesday 16 September, 2pm–3pm
- Wednesday 23 September, 2pm–3pm
Wheatley sessions
Sessions in Wheatley will be held at Wheatley United Reform Church, High Street, on:
- Thursday 17 September, 2pm–3pm
- Thursday 24 September, 2pm–3pm
Katy Slade, Area Development Manager at Parkinson’s UK, said the organisation hopes the free sessions will prove popular and provide an opportunity to introduce a new activity to the area.
She said the taster sessions will also allow Parkinson’s UK to gather feedback from local people and added that those interested in meeting others affected by Parkinson’s are encouraged to get in touch, even if Boxercise is not for them.
Parkinson’s is a complex brain condition that gets worse over time and can cause more than 40 symptoms, including tremor, pain and anxiety. There is currently no cure.
The charity says someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the UK every 20 minutes, while the number of people living with the condition worldwide is expected to reach 25 million by 2050.
