Freddie van Mierlo, the MP for Henley and Thame, is appearing at The Players Theatre, Thame on Wednesday 30th September.
In the first half of the evening, Freddie will talk about his background growing up in Lancashire, his university education, and his work as a consultant to healthcare companies and patient groups, which gave him valuable insight into health systems and the issues they face.
He will talk about his work following his election as a Liberal Democrat MP in 2024, and how he cares deeply for our local community and the uniquely special environment we live in. He will shed light on what motivates him as our MP, how he sees the future developing, both locally and farther afield, and how we can all contribute to improve our environment and way of life.
Important local campaigns he is leading include:
- Sewage dumping and pollution in the River Thame. Freddie says, “Thames Water have been dumping sewage into the River Thame for far too long. The available statistics record how often and how long sewage is released, but not the volume, meaning the true scale of environmental damage remains unknown. We need full transparency and stronger action to protect our rivers.”
- The Haddenham and Thame Greenway. The Greenway would create a safe, dedicated walking and cycling route between Thame and Haddenham, providing a much-needed alternative to the busy A418. Freddie says, “The Greenway has the potential to transform everyday local journeys. The project has now been identified as a priority in Oxfordshire County Council’s Strategic Plan, but it’s important we keep the momentum going.”
He also campaigns to achieve broadband/fibre access for local residents, against the further development of Chalgrove Airfield, the loss of local post office services, and for banking hubs.
In the second half of the evening, there will be an opportunity to ask Freddie questions about his work as an MP, about local issues, what he is doing to achieve appropriate action, and about what he cares about most.
Freddie has been the Liberal Democrat MP for Henley and Thame since 2024, with a 45% share of the vote. His election marked a significant shift, as the constituency, formerly known as Henley, had been held by the Conservatives since 1910. Until 2025, he was also a member of Oxfordshire County Council and South Oxfordshire District Council.
