Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Thame Utd

An excellent performance saw the Red Kites bounce back from Saturday's opening day result and inflict defeat on much-fancied Cirencester Town in Gloucestershire tonight.

Thame started brightly and an early Dan West strike forced the hosts keeper into a smart save.

The Red Kites were looking lively in the first 15 minutes but then the home side gradually grew into the game and took the lead when they kept the ball alive from a corner, worked it out wide and a wicked cross was headed home from close range.

Cirencester then enjoyed a period of play where they were in control and Thame had to dig deep to weather the storm.

An equaliser came when Mepham & Smith linked up superbly on the Thame left and a smart back-heel from Smith allowed Dave Pearce to unleash an unstoppable first-time effort in to the top corner.

Half-Time: Cirencester Town 1 - 1 Thame Utd

The second half was quite uneventful for 15-20 minutes as the game was repeatedly disrupted by fouls from either side or the referee talking to players, managers and waving his cards around freely.

The winning goal would come after 75 minutes as a ball forward was collected by Adam Smith on the Thame left. He cut inside to beat the defender before curling the ball beyond the advancing Cirencester keeper, a superb goal and Smith's first of the season.

As you would expect Thame were then required to stand strong as the home side threw everything at them but this new-look side did stand strong and headed, blocked and did whatever they had to do to ensure the 3 points returned to Oxfordshire.

This was an excellent team performance in which it would be hard to pick out any individual. A performance which will give this side a huge boost ahead of an exciting FA Cup tie at Marlow on Saturday.

Final Score: Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Thame Utd (Pearce 38, Smith 75).
