Thame United FC 1 - 0 Cambridge City FC

Today's encounter saw Mark West's Thame United FC (4th place) host Cambridge City FC (12th place).

Thame were in search of back to back wins following their 1-0 away win on New Year's Day @ Kidlington FC.

Thame knew another 3 points would keep them flying in 4th place and firmly in hunt for a playoff spot.

The Red Kites didn't disappoint and grinded out a 1-0 victory to secure back to back league wins and remain 4th in the league table.

It should be noted that Thame's GK Craig Hill was unavailable for selection and a late signing of David Lyons proved invaluable for today's fixture.

Cambridge had the better share of possession and chances in the first twenty minutes in the first half.

The deadlock was broken when Thame were awared a free kick near the corner flag which was taken by Lynton Goss and headed into the back of the net by 'Mr Golden Boot' Dan west on 27 mins. The goal did help the sides confidence and Thame were able to exert control on the game.

In the second half Cambridge upped the tempo and the Thame defence did have to absorb pressure dealing with multiple crosses, blocked shots and last ditch tackles. Deep in the second half GK Lyons had to stop a run at goal 7 yards from the goal line.

This was a well balanced game in which the Thame GK and defence must take huge credit. The volume of blocks and crosses dealt with not to mention last ditch tackles was appreciated by the home fans. As when the referee blow the final whistle the players were given a standing ovation.

Cambridge will feel very unfortunate as despite numerous runs at goal, set pieces and crosses the key chance was not taken to score. Cambridge should feel proud as they players did put pressure on Thame until the final whistle.
