Did you know that Thame was granted a market charter in 1215 and that markets have been held weekly since that time? During May, to celebrate the national ‘Love your Local Market’ initiative, Thame’s Tuesday Charter Market ran themed events each week of May, with each theme celebrating a different aspect of the market.
Week 1: The Community Stall
The market runs a weekly community stall that local groups can use for free to promote themselves and fundraise. To celebrate this wonderful opportunity there was live music performed by Simon Markland, to promote Music in The Park, who were using the stall to sell tickets for this popular family music festival.
Week 2: Local Produce
The main market was joined by Thame Farmers Market – hosting local producers selling delicious food and gorgeous products straight from their farms, kitchen tables and gardens directly to you. There were free tasters available for all shoppers to celebrate.
Week 3: The Royal Connection
It’s a Royal Charter so the market didn’t miss the chance to celebrate the Royal Wedding with surprise visits from ‘Harry’ and ‘Meghan’, and some lovely treats for customers throughout the day
Week 4: The History
To celebrate that there has been a Tuesday market for over 800 years ‘An Exhibition’ was held with photos starting from circa 1900 displayed throughout the market.
Week 5: The Future
Supported by The Creation Station, the market ran some brilliant market-themed craft activities for children on their half-term holidays. Children who came not only made some incredible veggie-creatures, they also got to find out more about what a market was – some had never been to one before.
