United extended their unbeaten league run to six matches with a comfortable win against their visitors from Hampshire.
The only changes from the side that had beaten Egham Town the previous week saw Harry Mepham come in on the right side of midfield, with James McGowan returning to Centre Back and putting in a man-of-the-match performance.
United opened brightly and forced a number of early corners, the fifth of which led to the opening goal on nine minutes. Lynton Goss swung the ball in from the left to the far post where it was met with a powerful header from McGowan, giving Liam Beach in the visitor’s goal no chance. It did not take long for the second goal to arrive, with Harry Mepham delivering a low cross the from the right that was met by Luke Ricketts who finished high in to the roof of the net from the edge of the six yard box.
The visitors then enjoyed their best period of the game, with captain Matt Bunyan always dangerous. Indeed, Craig Hill did well in the 22nd minute to get down to a drive from distance. However, apart for that effort, the visitors had nothing to show in front of goal and it was no real surprise when United scored a third just before the break and effectively finished the game as a contest. A Fleet clearance was won by Ellis Hercules, whose header dropped to Dan West just inside the Fleet half, West then played the ball through to Lynton Goss who out paced his marker before sliding the ball under Beach.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first had ended, with United pressing forward and after Goss had twice forced good saves from Beach, his corner on 60 minutes was headed against the bar by Ben Sturgess before being crossed back in to the box where Sturgess this time volleyed just wide. Three minutes later and it was 4-0 as Goss delivered another corner and this time West glanced a header wide of Beach.
Beach was in action again shortly afterwards, somehow keeping out a powerful effort from McGowan from a Goss corner, before then tipping a header over the bar from McGowan. United still pressed and with five minutes to go an Adam Morris header was saved by Beach with the follow-up effort striking the post before eventually being cleared.
As it was, the game finished 4-0 with United now looking to maintain the momentum in the coming week with tough matches at home to Hartley Wintney on Tuesday evening, before travelling to league leaders AFC Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday.
