Following the creation of two new Wetland scrapes in Cuttle Brook Nature Reserve in February this year, the Cuttle Brook Conservation Volunteers approached Thame Town Council to ask for approval to put a fence around these areas. The purpose of this was to protect the new sensitive habitat that was emerging.
Temporary fencing was initially installed, and this has already proved successful with a variety of wet-loving plants already being established. The expectation is that these will eventually come to dominate, providing habitats for specialist animals to benefit from.
The Environment & Asset Committee at Thame Town Council in July 2025, agreed that the temporary fencing could be replaced by a permanent fence and hedge, and so a subsequent funding application was submitted to Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment to cover the costs of this work. This was granted in October 2025 and over the next 2 weeks, subject to good weather and no delays elsewhere, the work will be implemented.
The fencing will be installed by a contractor, and the hedging plants will be planted by volunteers from the local community along with volunteers from local businesses who are part of this year’s Thame Sustainability Champion Award.
