Long awaited Haddenham to Thame Greenway moves a step closer

5th November 2025

Plans for the long awaited Haddenham to Thame Greenway have taken a significant step forward this week, as Oxfordshire County Council confirmed its commitment to delivering the project as part of its new Oxfordshire Strategic Plan 2025–2028.

The proposed Greenway will create a safe, dedicated walking and cycling route between Thame and Haddenham and Thame Parkway Station, offering a much safer alternative to the busy A418.

The scheme has been in development for many years and has long been championed by local campaigners on both sides of the county border. The new Strategic Plan formally includes the Greenway as a priority project, with Oxfordshire County Council pledging to work with Buckinghamshire Council to secure the necessary powers, permissions and route alignment, with a planning application expected by 2027.

Cllr Kate Gregory, Liberal Democrat councillor for Thame division, who has campaigned on the issue for many years, said:

“As a long term advocate for this route, I’m thrilled to see the Haddenham to Thame Greenway finally entering the county strategic plan. For more than twenty years local residents have expressed concern about the risks of cycling or walking on the busy A418. With this commitment we’re moving from talking to building, providing a safe, green and healthy alternative for our community.”

Freddie van Mierlo, Liberal Democrat MP for Henley and Thame, also welcomed the news:

“This is a three mile stretch that could transform local travel, offering a safer and greener alternative to the A418. It should not be harder to build a cycle and walking path than a bypass and, with the right cooperation between national and local government, we can deliver safer and more connected communities and make active travel a real alternative.”

Work will continue over the coming years to finalise the design, secure funding and permissions, and ensure the Greenway reflects the needs of both Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire residents.
