Decking Solutions In Oxfordshire

22nd August 2025

If you’re pondering on a garden makeover for your outdoor space then decking of some description could well be the answer. Decking has been a garden option in the UK for several decades now. Timber is of course the traditional material but in recent years, composite decking has grown in popularity. Influencing the decking type you opt for will be such factors as your budget and the style of your garden. A more traditional garden will suit a timber decking – whereas composite decking is a great complement to a sharp, chic, urban outdoor space. But of course, ultimately, it’s down to your personal preference – and how much maintenance you want to do.

Timber offers a natural look and feel. Established in 1999, the Timber Decking and Cladding Association, promotes best practice for timber decking and associated structures. This type of decking does need more maintenance to prevent rotting, warping and insect damage – but it tends to be more affordable.

Composite decking, on the other hand, is easier to maintain. Further, it can be a more sustainable option as recycled materials are used in some composite decking.

At this juncture it’s worth noting that the grooves you see on some timber decking should be placed on the underside with the smooth side uppermost. There’s a long-standing, received wisdom that the grooves prevent the deck becoming slippery. But, in fact, the opposite is true. And having the grooves facing downwards aids water drainage and ventilation thus reducing decay.

Serving Thame and the Surrounding Area

Having decided that decking rather than slabs and aggregates is the way forward for your garden, then your next step might be to seek some expert advice. A reputable business involved in the retail and fitting of decking of all types is Oxfordshire Decking.

Serving the county, including Oxford, Bicester, Abingdon, Didcot and Thame, the company installs both timber (hardwood and softwood) and various brands of composite decking.

We asked them for their opinion on the pros and cons of timber and composite decking.
This is what they said:

‘Most people choose timber decking because of its cheaper price tag. Though of course there are some who either don’t mind the annual maintenance that comes with it or prefer the aesthetics of natural wood. I can’t deny that composite decking can cost 50 per cent more upfront. But of course, it will last twice as long, comes with zero maintenance (cleaning aside) needs and is weather and age resistant.

So, my advice is to go with a reputable composite board if you can because there’s no question that it will pay for itself.’
