Look what's happening in Thame! That's right EV chargers are coming to Southern Rd car park

Work on major EV charging scheme in South Oxfordshire close to completion

The installation of the Park and Charge Electric Vehicle charging scheme in South Oxfordshire looks close to completion as work is due to start on the last car park later this month.

Chargers for electric vehicles are set to be installed at the council-owned car park at Southern Road in Thame in the coming weeks. This would bring the total of spaces for cars to be charged up to 62 across five council-owned car parks in the district.

Southern Road will be the fifth and final South Oxfordshire District Council car park where EV chargers are being installed as part of the Park and Charge scheme. It will follow work at Cattlemarket and Goldsmith’s Lane in Wallingford as well as Greys Road and Kings Road in Henley.

The installation work involves several bays being fenced off temporarily and some short-term disruption to the car park.

All work is due to be completed by the end of March. We will announce when they are available to be used, however this will only be after a period when the chargers will be fully connected and tested.

Councillor Sue Cooper, South Oxfordshire District Council Cabinet member for Environment, Climate Change and Nature Recovery, said: “The scheme uses car park chargers as a way of solving the problem of residential charging where off-street parking is not available.

“The completion of this project is also a step towards our climate action targe for South Oxfordshire to be a carbon neutral district by 2030.”

This work is part of a county-wide scheme to install hundreds of EV charging points in council-owned car parks. More info here.

The Park and Charge scheme allows residents without off-street parking to park overnight and charge up using a ‘fast’ 7 – 22kw EV charging point. The chargers will also provide much needed battery top-ups to commuters and visitors during the daytime.
