Music in the Park is delighted to announce that, for the first time, signers will be providing interpreting services on the two main stages at this year’s event, which takes place on Sunday 5 May. The signers were invited to assist by Rosemary Fletcher, a member of the Music in the Park organising committee. Fletcher said, “We are committed to making Music in the Park accessible to all and using signers is another great way in which we can help everyone share in the joy of Music in the Park.”
Fletcher has hearing problems herself and took a British Sign Language course several years ago. During the course, she became good friends with signers Sarah Hobbs of Silent Sounds (www.facebook.com/bsl.silentsounds) and Marie Biswell of Hand Talking (www.facebook.com/HandTalking). Hobbs and Biswell are passionate about using their interpreting skills to help people with impaired hearing to fully enjoy performance events and jumped at the chance to volunteer at Music in the Park. Hobbs said, “We have a passion for music and just love conveying the feelings and emotion contained in songs to those for whom it would normally be inaccessible.”
