Memorial fixture raises £1,290 for Oxford University Hospitals

CHINNOR WIN LAUREN CYSTER MEGABOWL TROPHY

MORE than £1,200 was raised as the second Lauren Cyster Megabowl game proved an entertaining night in Thame.

Chinnor triumphed 52-15 over the RAF on a blustery evening which saw ten tries scored at Kingsey Road.

While the hosts lifted the Lauren Cyster Megabowl Trophy, the important number at the end of the night was the money raised for Oxford University Hospitals.

An initial count puts the total at £1,290 for the Oncology Ward at the Churchill Hospital, which provided such excellent care for our much-loved head physio Lauren during 2018.

Lauren’s mother Brenda Cyster said: “It’s just so amazing on a cold, windy Wednesday night that we got as many here as we do on a Saturday for a first-team game.

“I’m also immensely proud of the guys who put this team together tonight and thank you to the RAF.

“Events like these are really humbling to just how much Lauren was loved by the club. I just can’t thank Chinnor enough; they have been so supportive and amazing. We just feel the love every time we walk into the club.

“The people who work on the Oncology Ward are a special breed and it’s nice to give back to the people that really looked after all of us as well as Lauren. I can’t think of a more deserving place for that money to go to.”

Chinnor opened the scoring on 15 minutes, thanks to a superb try from Seb Scott. The ball was spread to the right and Kieran Goss, playing at outside centre, glided through a gap and fed the winger who shook off Jack Lowe’s attempted tackle to dot down for an unconverted try.

Full-back Lowe got the RAF on the scoreboard courtesy of a penalty, but the home side soon went on to lead 19-3.

Josh Hodson and Cameron Gray broke the gain line, before Caolan Ryan and Camilo Parilli-Ocampo were stopped just short. Gray then picked up to drive over from close range, Ryan converting.

Lowe then missed a penalty for the visitors, before Hodson scored a sensational try, cutting through the centre of the pitch and three attempted tackles in the 33rd minute. Ryan added the extras to extend Chinnor’s lead to 16 points.

The RAF hit back through Sean Chapman’s unconverted score, but the hosts crossed again before the break with Josh Pieterse driving over following a fine break from Sam Yawayawa. Ryan converted to make it 26-8.

Pieterse scored his second try three minutes after the interval, charging across after great hands from Goss and Scott. Ryan continued a good evening with the boot despite the windy conditions to make it 33-8.

The RAF responded well to hit back on 48 minutes through Ryan Crowley, Luke Riddell adding the extras, but Chinnor went on to increase their lead further.

A catch and drive led to Jo Brown going over, before Hodson eased through a gap to dot down, Ryan converting both, to make it 47-15.

A flurry of changes had a bit of an impact on the game, before the RAF had a man sin-binned late on.

There was still time for Chinnor’s eighth try and with space out wide, the ball was worked to the left where Matty Mountford rolled back the years with a little jink inside to go over and complete the scoring.
