The town of Thame is set to honour the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a series of special commemorative events on Thursday, 8 May. Organised by the Royal British Legion, the day will pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the Second World War generation, celebrating the freedoms secured through their efforts. The day’s programme will begin at 11:00am with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Thame War Memorial Gardens, offering the community an opportunity to reflect on those who gave their lives in service.Later in the evening, at 6:30pm, the church bells at St Mary’s Church will ring out in celebration, followed by a vibrant community gathering at Southern Road Recreation Ground for a Sing-a-Long at Sunset. Residents are encouraged to bring chairs, picnic rugs, torches, and flags to enjoy an evening of music featuring local artists and performances by the Air and Army Cadets. The day’s events will conclude at 9:30pm with the Lighting of the Beacon, also at Southern Road Recreation Ground—a symbolic gesture to unite the community in remembrance and gratitude. The Royal British Legion invites everyone to participate in this historic occasion to remember the enduring legacy of those who fought for peace in Europe.
