Thame Youth U16s were narrowly beaten in the League Cup final at the weekend.
After knocking out Division 1 opposition in previous rounds, Thame were looking to deliver another giant killing performance at Flackwell Heath FC in the U16s League Cup final!
Thame started well and had a couple of early efforts narrowly going wide, but Ickenham are a good organised side and have certainly improved since their semi final. Thame keeper Matthews was the difference in the first half, making three outstanding saves to keep them in the game. With great defending from the back four, Thame were happy to go into half time at 0-0.
A couple of changes saw Mather and Pickup come on into the midfield and immediately make a positive impact with their pace. Thame started to apply the pressure, looking much sharper second half.
The second half was a very finely balanced with Thame more than matching their higher ranked opponents.
With ten minutes to go Ickenham broke the deadlock; breaching Thame’s defence and leaving them with a one goal deficit and ten minutes to find a reply.
Thame continued to launch attack after attack with at least 4 attempts going agonisingly wide. Unfortunately Thame’s luck had just run out and the final whistle went.
On balance Ickenham had the better chances but Thame ran them close and to reach the league cup final knocking out the Division 1 winners this season and last seasons Division 1 winners is an incredible achievement!
