Former Lord Williams’s School student, entrepreneur and businessman to return for inspirational talk

Entrepreneur and successful businessman, Ben Delo, will be returning to the school that helped set him on the road to success on Thursday 9th May to give an inspirational talk to students in years 12 and 13 about his business success and career so far.

Ben, now 35, a computer programmer and co-founder of BitMEX, a derivatives trading platform for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, left LWS in 2002 and graduated from the University of Oxford (Worcester College) in 2005 with a double first in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Ben began his career as a software engineer at IBM, where he was granted patents for several inventions. He then developed high-frequency trading systems at hedge funds and banks such as GSA Capital and J.P. Morgan. He moved to Hong Kong in 2012 and later co-founded BitMEX . In 2018, when BitMEX became the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

Last year, Ben generously made a donation to the school to help pay for a much-needed heating upgrade to ensure the buildings were kept insulated and warm for students during the winter months.

Commenting on his forthcoming visit to LWS, Ben, who lives in Hong Kong, said: “I am excited to return to Lord Williams’s to talk with current students. I had incredible teachers and am very thankful for their dedication to my education. It is a privilege to be able to support the school’s infrastructure and I welcome the creation of the School Development Office.

LWS has recently launched an appeal to help raise £85,000 which will go towards funding three brand-new projects including updating classroom IT equipment, the refurbishment of the Sixth Form study area and a canteen seating area upgrade at the Lower School. Parents, carers and the wider community are being invited to make voluntary contributions to help secure the money needed to pay for these projects.
