Chinnor go top of National 1 despite losing at home to Bishops Stortford

CHINNOR 6 BISHOPS STORTFORD 13

Chinnor welcomed back old rivals Bishops Stortford to a wet and cold Kingsey Road for a fierce error strewn game where Stortford’s impressive defence out shone the home team’s attacking threat.

Playing with the wind Chinnor kicked off & immediately camped out in Stortford’s 22m. A strong break by James Neal led to a Chinnor penalty and from the resulting driving line out were held up over the line. From the resulting scrum referee Alex Thomas awarded Chinnor with a free kick and they elected to continue to scrum. Three consecutive scrum penalties followed. Stortford’s battled bravely with huge hits and after 15 minutes of constant Chinnor possession a midfield offside penalty was struck by Caolan Ryan on 17 minutes.

More of the same followed and Chinnor with all the possession struggled to break down a well drilled and physical Stortford defence. Caolan Ryan added a further penalty for the hosts on 31 minutes. With the final play of the half Stortford enjoyed their first opportunity to attack the Chinnor try line dropping the ball over the line bringing the half to a close 6-0 to Chinnor.

Stortford kicked off the second half off and after a short kicking exchange, were awarded a 5m scrum. A strong scrum resulted in a penalty try and yellow card to Chinnor tight head Jack Gilding. Chinnor then found their feet and applied huge pressure but once again the Stortford defence was resolute. Further penalties were kicked by Stortford’s talented flyhalf Vunipola on 65 and 75 minutes. With 5 minutes left on the clock Chinnor threw the kitchen sink at Stortford. With final play called Chinnor kept the ball marching up field from their own tryline until a forward pass was thrown and final whistle blown.

Chinnor DOR Matt WIlliams commented, “Stortford’s defence was superb and we never looked like breaching it. We tried to play far too much rugby on a very wet day and when you have 75% of possession and no score is disappointing. The win definitely belongs to their defence!”
