The Big Breakfast – Week one, The Thatch

Our foody enters week one of ‘Thame’s best breakfast’ and what a place to start, The Thatch. One of Thame’s finest pubs and restaurants, but how does it fair with a morning fry-up?

“What a place to start my quest to find Thame’s best breakfast. I personally rarely go in The Thatch, not for any particular reason, other than special occasions. Obviously the venue is lovely, warm, and being welcomed instantly by an enthusiastic and friendly staff team is always particularly nice, whatever meal or reason you are attending.

After choosing to sit near the fireplace, in a cosy part of the pub rather than the restaurant, the waitress soon came over with a menu and took the drinks order. The menu everything you could want with of course my main reason for being there – the full English breakfast. After being slightly shocked by the £9.50 price tag, the waitress returned and I ordered with a slight change to the line-up – wasn’t a problem at all (I hate it when you ask to change something and the member of staff makes you feel awkward for daring to ask!).

After a brief wait, along came the best looking plate of food I’ve seen in a long time, beautifully presented, where do you start with a breakfast that looks this good?? I started with the part I usually don’t like – black pudding, and to my surprise, it was lovely! Followed by nice warm toast (nothing worse than cold toast) and beans (again hot – instant fail if the beans are cold!). The art of poaching an egg had been executed perfectly, it was almost a shame to break the yolk, although an absolute treat at the same time! Two rashes of streaky bacon, two eggs (I think I expected this when I saw the £9.50 price tag) a decent portion which I have to admit I didn’t expect. The penultimate taste test was the mushrooms, no one likes oily mushrooms, and I should have guessed by now – these certainly weren’t oily! Finally, my favourite part of any breakfast, the sausage – the biggest test of them all. This certainly was a pleasure, proper sausages, (I assume local produce) and they were the best part of the meal for me – I could have eaten five…

All in all, this is going to take some beating! Every single part of the breakfast perfectly cooked, beautifully presented – faultless! And despite initially thinking wow that’s a lot of money for a breakfast, it fully justifies that price tag…I certainly shall be back…”

Wow! A great start to the competition. Looking forward to round two next week…
