After a four week hiatus, The Big Breakfast returns this week. Our foody had unfortunately been able to continue the challenge over the last few weeks due to personal reasons, but they’re back and the show must go on as they say.
This week we’ve sent them to Treacles Tea Room to have a taste of what their full English breakfast has to offer.
“I hadn’t actually been to Treacles Tea Rooms since it changed hands in 2014, I used to eat in the cafe quite frequently when it was Time Out so this was an exciting challenge for me.
Upon walking in, the first thing you notice is that it really has a great town community cafe vibe – cutlery clinking, tea being slurped and the chatter of customers enjoying their breakfasts. Two floors both decorated to give a quite quintessential cafe fervour.
Looking at the menu I was pleased to see a very reasonable £6.50 for the full English breakfast – the cheapest yet on my search for Thame’s best breakfast. The staff were bustling around the cafe, making sure tables were clean, ready for the next customers, and it wasn’t long before a smiling young lady came to take my order. For consistency I of course ordered the full English breakfast with one change. I must add that the Treacles Tea Room menu had plenty to offer in the way of breakfast and all reasonable prices.
Now the best part – The food. It arrived 10-15 minutes after placing my order, which was an adequate amount of time as the place was very busy, and besides I was happy it gave me a chance to take in the lovely atmosphere.
The food arrived and my immediate thoughts were – have they put this breakfast on the right plate, it seemed far too small for what the breakfast was and the beans had overtaken the plate due to lack of space.
Further observations – the sausage was excellent although I was rather upset that there was only one on my plate. The eggs were OK and I say just OK because after having The Thatch’s eggs I can’t look at any the same again as they were superb. The bacon was slightly fatty but to counteract that the tomato was lovely and well presented.
All in all a slightly above average breakfast that with a few little tweaks could really rival the Thatch in the future. Teacles Tea Rooms was a lovely place to visit and I was even tempted to stay in for Cheese cake after.”
